Girls Are for 29
Consumption of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) has been shown to improve mineral absorption in the short term, but no long-term effects were studied in girls with a low calcium intake. Therefore, we hypothesized that short- and long-term consumption of short-chain FOS (sc-FOS) improves calcium and magnesium absorption in girls with a low habitual calcium intake. Fourteen girls aged between 12 and 14 years received, for 36 days, 10 g sc-FOS (sc-FOS) or maltodextrin (placebo). Short-chain FOS were taken daily for 8 days followed by an intermittent intake mode on 28 random days to mimic noncontinuous intake. In a crossover design, true calcium and magnesium absorption was computed on the 8th and 36th day of each treatment period from isotope enrichment in urine. In addition, the parathyroid hormone and vitamin D in serum and markers of bone resorption in urine (pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline) were determined. Short-chain FOS increased magnesium absorption by 18% after 36 days (30.1% +/- 9.1% vs 35.4% +/- 12.8%). Magnesium absorption did not change after the initial 8 days of long-term sc-FOS intake. Short-chain FOS did not affect calcium absorption. In addition, sc-FOS did not affect vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, or markers of bone resorption. It is concluded that consumption of sc-FOS for 36 days stimulated magnesium absorption in girls but did not affect calcium absorption.
The two-day event highlights three teams of high school age girls coming together online to develop a business with viable concepts to remedy Mental Health Issues in line with the United Nationals Sustainability Goals for Wellness and Mental Health. The girls chosen represent diversity in geography, age, culture, and academic experience.
The free two-day event begins July 29 in Zoom with preparing the girls for the project and their teams. July 30 is when the magic happens as the girls finalize their presentations. As they prepare, join the Girls in S.T.E.A.M. Institute to celebrate their accomplishments with amazing speakers and keynotes.
By participating the the Girls in S.T.E.A.M. Institute business challenge, the girls and their parents have an opportunity to meet and learn from business owners and industry leaders in the STEAM fields. Many are familiar with S.T.E.M. programs for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. S.T.E.A.M. returns the power of the Arts into the mix.
The project comes at a crucial moment for Angola, as COVID-19 school closures risk accelerating the dropout rate of adolescent girls and contribute to learning losses for untold numbers of students. To combat this, the project consists of three components. Component 1 improves access to sexual and reproductive health services, while strengthening the information and knowledge of girls, boys, parents, and community leaders to boost uptake of these services. For out of school youth, the project scales up second chance education, incorporating life skills and adolescent health information. It also introduces a scholarship program reaching 900,000 youth entering secondary school, with a registration bonus for girls. Under Component 2, support will be provided to improve teaching and learning outcomes, and 3,000 new classrooms will be built. Component 3 ensures efficient monitoring and management of the project and supports research to inform education policy development.
The free screening will be on Thursday, November 29 at Light House Studio, 220 West Market Street, at 5:45pm. Popcorn and pizza will be provided and the girls will participate in a Q&A immediately following the film. We hope to see you there! 2ff7e9595c
